BIO

Joana Lucas is a Berlin-based Portuguese visual artist. She graduated in Visual Arts and
Photography at University of Lisbon, and Statens Kunstakademi, in Oslo. Lives and works in
Berlin since 2005.
She creates photorealistic paintings that represent images of fractured daily life in the urban
environment. Her paintings show the fascination and power of the uncanny and the foreign
through pictures that play with beauty, social media and classical aesthetics. She understand her
surroundings through images and uses them as a code to both interpret information and
communicate.
Her work has been exhibited regularly since 2001 and in several shows internationally. It is
represented in art collections in Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, United Kingdom,
Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and USA
